- Aikido
- The way of harmony with energy of the universe. The name of the martial art we practice.
- Aikidoka
- A practitioner of Aikido
- Boken
- A wooden practice sword commonly used in Aikido Training
- Chuden
- A grade recognising the fifth level of ki development
- Chukyu
- A grade recognising the second level of Ki development.
- Dan
- A term used to describe black belt grades.
- Do
- The way or the path I.E. a way of life.
- Dojo
- Place of the way. A place where a Do is practiced. A martial arts training hall.
- Gi
- A white training uniform commonly used in Aikido and Judo.
- Jo
- A short wooden staff commonly used in Aikido training.
- Jokyu
- A grade recognising the third level of Ki development.
- Kata
- A form of training where students pair up to practice a specific technique. Each student alternates between attacking and defending during the course of training.
- Ki
- Ki means energy. As a concept it represents the underlying energy of the universe. It is present in all things and can be directed by the human mind.
- Ki No Kenkyukai
- See Ki Society.
- Ki Society
- A translation of the organisations japanese name Ki No Kenkyukai. The Ki Society exists to teach people about Ki and teaches a style of aikido called Shin Shin Toitsu Aikido. Our dojo is affiliated with the Ki Society.
- Kiatsu
- Kiatsu is a healing therapy using Ki energy.
- Kyu
- A term used to describe grades below black belt.
- Okuden
- A grade recognising the sixth level of ki development
- Nage
- When training Nage takes the roll of defender and performs the technique being practiced.
- Randori
- A method of training where one student will defend themselves from multiple attackers.
- Sensei
- The japanese word for teacher or instructor.
- Shinkondo
- The way of mind and spirit. The name of our dojo.
- Shin Shin Toitsu Aikido
- Aikido with mind and body unification. The style of aikido practiced by the Ki Society.
- Shodan
- The first grade of black belt.
- Shoden
- A grade recognising the fourth level of ki development
- Shokyu
- A grade recognising the first level of Ki development.
- Taigi
- Taigi consist of a group of techniques. Each Taigi is practiced by a pair of students with one providing a series of specific attacks and the other demonstrating a set of specific defences.
- Taiso
- A form of training where a prescribed group of Waza and stretches are practiced one after another.
- Tanto
- A wooden, single edged knife commonly used in Aikido training.
- Uke
- When training Uke takes the roll of aggressor and usually takes a fall at the completion of the technique.
- Ukemi
- A collective name for the techniques taught for safely taking a fall; break-falling and rolling.
- Waza
- An exercise containing the underlying movement(s) of one or more techniques.
