Aikido Technique Grades
Ki Grades

In a Ki Society dojo there are two grading streams, they are Aikido techniques and Ki development.

Aikido Technique Grades

As you train and progress in knowledge and skill you will be asked to grade. Grades below Shodan (Black Belt) are referred to as kyu grades (pronounced as Q grades) and grades from Sho-dan up are the dan grades. Grading requires a student to demonstrate a knowledge of certain Waza (exercises that form the basis of a technique) and actual techniques. This is performed with a partner acting as Uke (the attacker) and the student as Nage (defender). At Dan levels the student will demonstate techniques in a randori situation. This involves multiple attackers repeatedly attacking the student while they defend themselves. At Dan levels the grading also includes demonstration of Weapons Kata using a Boken (Wooden practice sword) and a Jo (A short wooden staff).

Ki Grades

A large part of training involves developing a student's ability to extend Ki. Training in Ki development includes breathing exercises, meditation techniques and Ki tests. Students are encouraged to be creative in their Ki development and learn to apply Ki in their daily lives. This training has many benefits including greater ability to relax even when under pressure, greater ability to deal with or avoid stress, greater self discipline and the cleansing effects of breathing exercises. Ki gradings take place periodically over the course of training and can only be carried out by teachers who are certified to test to the necessary level with the Ki society.
